"The book says that Notch is the creator, which means he created me too. I just want to find out what my purpose is, why I'm here."

-STEVE TO JASON IN AN EGG'S GUIDE TO MINECRAFT - PART 8 - WHERE'D MY WOOD GO?

Steve is one of the main characters of the YouTube channel Element Animation, the non-speaking antagonist of The Crack! - Jason's Holiday, the deuteragonist in An Egg's Guide to Minecraft, and a recurring character in Dan Bull's Mob Rap videos. He is best known as Jason's friend and fellow traveler in Egg's Guide, and later the captive Jason needs to rescue.

He was voiced by the late Scott Stoked, but it is unknown who will voice him next. Steve's goal is to find out what his purpose is and to do so, he must find Notch.

Personality[]

In Jason's Holiday, not much is known about Steve. He appears to have a warped sense of humor, judging by the fact that he kidnaps and shoots at Jason to make him host a game, and that he reveals himself at the end.

In An Egg's Guide to Minecraft, Steve is defensive and wary of the unknown, as seen when he first meets Jason and again when he pins the witch against a wall. He has a somewhat fiery temper, such as when he pulls a sword on Jason for calling himself round. However, beneath that exterior lies a loyal and fiercely protective heart, which is unearthed the many times he helps Jason out of predicaments. Steve is curious and reveals that he spends time pondering his life's purpose, and has jumped at the chance to find it. Following his torture in Part 16, he appears to suffer from either amnesia or brainwashing, which makes him threaten Jason as if they're first meeting.

Biography[]

The Crack![]

Steve's only appearance in The Crack! is at the end of Jason's Holiday. Jason mentions him, though not by name, when he says he's been kidnapped. Steve is the unseen gunman firing at Jason and forcing him to tell the viewers he's playing a game. The correct answer to the last question is "the guy from Minecraft". If the viewer answers the question correctly, an early version of Steve runs past the camera holding a pistol. If any of the questions are answered incorrectly, Steve remains hidden but shoots through the chain suspending Jason's cage, dropping him to his death.

An Egg's Guide to Minecraft[]

Throughout most of Egg's Guide, Steve has been a good friend and traveling companion to Jason, until he is captured and his memory erased by The Great and Powerful One.

Steve first appears in the ending of Part 3. He shoots the creepers that were advancing on Jason, then turns his bow on Jason himself, demanding to know who he is.

In Part 4, Steve questions Jason on his weird "round" shape that he has not seen before, but becomes aggressive again when Jason says he's round. Steve took Jason to an NPC village, looking for food. Once there, they are told that a beast is attacking the village. Steve leads Jason to the scene and both jump out to confront it, only to find a cow.

In Part 5, Steve refuses to kill the cow, seeing it as unnecessary. He is unimpressed by the cowardly warrior trying to kill it. While "dying", the warrior calls Steve over and hands him a book. Steve looks in it and says it tells how to find someone called "Notch".

In Part 6, Steve is unable to find who Notch is in the book and takes Jason to the village library to find out. He accidentally pulls out a book that opens a chute and drops Jason down it. Finding himself alone, he thinks he needs some friends. Steve reappears in the library, reading the Minecraft Wiki in book form and discovering who Notch is. Just as he realizes this, a nearby villager startles him. Upon seeing Jason back, Steve explains that Notch lives somewhere far away and that they require diamonds to get there.

In Part 7, he interrupts the court before they can execute Jason at the suggestion of a baby villager. When he tries to introduce himself as Jason's lawyer, the judge cannot figure his name out, frustrating Steve. He asks for the price of Jason's bail, and successfully lowers it to one block of dirt. After Jason is freed, the two leap into the air in celebration, only to freeze in position.

In Part 8, Steve is leading Jason through a forest at sunset. When Jason asks to stop and rest, Steve accepts. He overhears Jason talking to the voice inside his head and wonders who Jason is talking to. He decides to leave and gather firewood, and returns carrying a massive stack of wood blocks. It is revealed that he returned to the village and tore down the wooden parts. That night by the campfire, Jason asks Steve how long to go to find Notch. Steve answers that he doesn't know, but that as the creator of Minecraft, Notch also created him, and he wants to find out his purpose. An arrow flying from the darkness startles Steve, and he grabs his sword and beats off a barrage of the projectiles. One impales his chest and exits from his back, bringing him helplessly to his knees with half a heart of health. An enderman teleports into camp and snatches the book despite Steve's pleas, after which the latter faints.

In Part 9, Steve has a dream about everything that happened in the series since his meeting with Jason, shots of the remainder of the episode, and shots of things that haven't happened yet. He wakes up, still badly wounded, just as one of the villagers is leaving with the rest of the wood. Steve sees Jason talking to a cow and races to punch it to death, accidentally hitting Jason with his other hand. Prompted by the voice in his head, Jason asks Steve why he hit the "pig". Eating the meat to heal his injury, Steve is confused by the question. He asks Jason why he is floating and watches him curiously while he screams and rotates in midair. Steve grows annoyed with Jason when he keeps screaming on the ground, and hits him back into the air. He enters a vision that shows him the eye of ender Jason ate, and how to find a stronghold and get to The End, where they can find their stolen book.

In Part 10, Steve tries to explain to a grumpy Jason why he hit him. Jason spits out the eye of ender to prove he had no reason to do it. Steve teases Jason about it not being fun, prompting him to hop off. While Jason is complaining, Steve falls into a hole that opens up below him. Jason soon joins him in a minecart. Before Steve can grab the eye of ender in the minecart in front of theirs, both carts speed off down a long track. Steve keeps trying to grab the Eye of Ender, but is distracted by a Segway Creeper. Steve tries to buy one of the photos taken of him and Jason, but the carts whisk them away again before he can get it. The pair are launched into a large cave with a lava pit, and start flying in slow motion. Steve is startled by Jason turning briefly into The Great and Powerful One's head. The pair land safely in their minecart, revealing that Steve has got the Eye of Ender back, but crash into a stone pillar. The camera reveals Steve lying unconscious, and he wakes up and discovers his right arm is broken. Seeing Jason also knocked out, he tries to wake him. He looks around and is surprised by a massive statue of The Great and Powerful One.

In Part 12, The Great and Powerful One once again appears to Steve, this time as multiple floating heads that converge on him and vanish at the last second. Stranded with a fractured arm and a delirious friend, Steve is surprised by a villager he sees circling them. He captures the villager, who mistakes him for The Great and Powerful One. Seeing Steve's broken arm, he runs off to get something for it. Curious, Steve follows him and finds him talking to himself while rummaging through a chest. The villager runs back carrying a Potion of Healing and collides with Steve, offering it to him. Suspicious, Steve drinks it and his arm is restored. He asks the villager where they are. The stranger tells him that this is an abandoned village, and the statue that greeted their arrival was a shrine to The Great and Powerful One. After being concerned for Jason's health due to his odder-than-usual behavior, Steve blames it on a temporary head injury. The villager asks Steve why he came. Steve asks him where to find a stronghold, and the villager realizes upon telling him that "The Great and Powerful One" knows where the nearest stronghold is. Laughing at the thought of being mistaken for him, Steve reveals that he's not him. Shocked, the villager runs off to talk to himself, claiming that Steve looks exactly like The Great and Powerful One, then suddenly realizes who he must be. Steve calls out for him, and he comes back to quickly say good luck before dashing away again. Steve thanks him, picks up the eye of ender, and carries Jason to the stronghold entrance. The villager reveals his true identity, a witch, and summons The Great and Powerful One, telling him that "The one you spoke of is here!"

Injured Steve

In Part 13, Steve rouses Jason from his unconscious state at the End portal room. They activate the portal with their eye of ender, but just as they jump in, The Great and Powerful One appears and throws them back, greeting Steve with "Hello Brother!" Jason panics upon the army of mobs being summoned into the room, and Steve leads him into a frantic chase through the stronghold tunnels. He is suddenly thrown back by a strange white barrier, and wakes up in a white room beside Jason. He is confused, and Jason says the game is updating. Looking around, Steve sees the mobs that were chasing them, and discovers that they are harmless, even friendly here. Steve waits beside Jason until the update completes and returns them to the tunnel. He asks the mobs if they should continue the chase, and flees them alongside Jason upon their approval. Twice the tunnel caves in below them. At the bottom of the second, Steve spots the mobs coming after them, and is already ahead of Jason when the latter shouts to keep going. Steve emerges halfway down a ravine and skids to a halt on the edge; however, Jason runs blindly into him and knocks him off. Steve brings out his diamond pickaxe and drives it into the cliff to save himself. He climbs up and runs ahead of Jason onto the narrow bridge spanning the ravine, but stops halfway across upon noticing another group of mobs approaching from the opposite side. Following Jason, he is second to gasp upon The Great and Powerful One's reappearance.

In Part 14, Steve throws Jason across the bridge, but discovers he is now alone when Jason is possessed. The Great and Powerful One orders Steve to come with him, but he refuses, tells him to leave a message after the beep, and throws himself into the ravine. Jason is released to assume his friend is dead. A vocal "BEEEEEEEEEEP" echoes up from the depths, indicating that he survived. Wrong-footed, The Great and Powerful One tries to leave a message, and is prompted by Villager #37 to perform an evil laugh, which he does and adds, "Call me!" Villager #37 wonders if Steve is alive, and an automated "You have one new message" precedes Steve screaming profanity. The Great and Powerful One orders an enderman to teleport into the ravine and bring him back. It returns clutching a shocked and struggling Steve, who is quickly subdued when The Great and Powerful One commands him to sleep. He sends the enderman to return Steve to the End portal.

Steve is frequently mentioned in Parts 15 and 16. Jason is determined to rescue him and mistakes Alex for him, Villager #37 believes him to be lost forever, and Alex doesn't believe Jason and wonders if Steve has diamonds she can collect. In the beginning of Part 16, The Great and Powerful One is in his headquarters and wonders what he was doing just before the Enderman showed up. Upon his realization, the camera pans to Steve, still unconscious and now strapped to a table. Jason mentions Steve by complaining that he's much nicer than Alex, and near the end, all he cares about is having his friend back. Alex comments on how much Jason likes Steve. Steve finally wakes up, only to find himself tied up and The Great and Powerful One preparing to get a whole lot closer. It is unknown exactly what happens next, as all we see is the exterior of the headquarters, with Steve screaming loudly within and a cloud of white smoke emerging from the doors.

In Part 17, Steve is mentioned, though not by name, when Jason asks the villagers to join them in battle. He is later mentioned near the ending, when Jason and George decide to save him themselves. Steve, having been knocked out again, wakes up on the same table and finds himself untied and able to sit up, looking around.

In Part 18, Jason and George are attacked by mobs and captured on the mission to save Steve. Steve makes an appearance at the end, emerging from the shadows of the headquarters and threatening Jason with a sword, failing to recognize him and repeating his first line he said when he met Jason, with a noticeably deeper voice.

He is then asked if he has ever tried to ride a pig on a cow on a villager's head. The camera shows a villager with a cow on his head, a pig on its back, and Steve wobbling on the pig. Steve's next question is how he got a phone in Minecraft. He fakes surprise that the asker does not have a phone and asks how they would get Element's official app now. Steve's final question is how he feels about people changing his skin. He answers that it's horrible while his skin constantly fades through different ones.

In Bite-Sized Minecraft, Steve appears on a dating show, bragging about how awesome he is. He is next seen punching away one of the squids. In the next skit, he screams at the tree to stop singing and punches a block from his trunk. Steve is then seen building a castle when an enderman steals one of his blocks. He turns around to see it, but then all the blocks surrounding the walkway are missing. All at once, the enderman makes some noise and the camera zooms out, revealing it stole his arm that was holding the block. Next, Steve is building a wooden house when a creeper attempts to ambush him. He punches it down and snaps at it. Steve then cries on the dating show, saying he only wants to be loved. He rolls past endless identical outfits and a squid until he stops on a golden outfit, gasping, then picks an outfit close to it. Steve is then shown finding a pressure plate that opens a door to a different room every time he steps on it. He tries to break the door down, only to be punched by the lever again. Finally, Notch tells Steve and a friend he added puppies, which are really baby dragons, with one eating Steve.

Trivia[]

  • Sadly, Scott Stoked passed away on January 30th 2015. It is currently unknown who replaced the voice of Steve, although Element Animation have confirmed his voice will be heard in the future. They have confirmed that because Scott left behind enough vocals, he can still portray Steve.
  • In Part 18 of An Egg's Guide to Minecraft, he has a speaking role at the very end. It was later confirmed that wasn't Scott as Element Animation confirmed that they were hiring a new person who can voice him.
  • His new voice is also deeper, implying that his body could be possessed, but it is unknown if this will ever be touched upon in the series.
  • Due to a question he asks in Part 13, it is possible (though unconfirmed) that Steve is a fan of One Direction.
  • He is known to hate the book Twilight.
  • Steve makes a cameo on the MINECON 2015 Opening Ceremony behind the London Tourist Villager.
  • An early version of Steve is revealed as Jason's kidnapper in The Crack! Jason's Holiday. However, it is unknown if this is the same Steve, as he does not recognize Jason in Egg's Guide.
    • When he is first introduced, Steve's model has elbows, knees, and a redesigned face with moving parts. However, in YOU DID IT!!!!, his model exactly resembles his in-game counterpart, even though it came out one year later.
  • Steve sleeps naturally with his eyes open, though he only does this in ASK ELEMENT ANYTHING! All other times (fainting, being put to sleep, etc) his eyes close.
  • He also sleeps with his eyes closed in HELP US MAKE VIDEOS.
