-THE GREAT AND POWERFUL ONE TO JASON IN AN EGG'S GUIDE TO MINECRAFT - PART 14 - YOU HAVE ONE NEW MESSAGE

The Great and Powerful One is the main antagonist of An Egg's Guide to Minecraft, first seen in Episode 10 as a statue and head, and as the voices in Jason's head throughout the series before his reveal. Despite his previous status as a deity, he is infamous for tricking Jason, trying to kill him, and capturing Steve and wiping his memory.

Personality[]

As the voice inside Jason's head, The Great and Powerful One seems friendly and helpful. He looks out for Jason during his first day and night, and when Steve threatens him that round things don't exist, presumably to gain his trust. He then persuades Jason to keep the voice in his head a secret from Steve so he wouldn't think Jason was insane. However, when his true nature is revealed, The Great and Powerful One is far from great. He is cruel, manipulative, and calculating. He cares nothing for the well-being of others, including his own brother, Steve, and only wishes to use them for his own ends, going so far as to order Jason's murder when he decides he's no longer useful. He is very dominant over his mobs and is able to command them to do anything he wants. He also is extremely patient when he wants to be, as seen when he waits for Steve to wake up.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

The Great and Powerful One is the lost brother of Steve, or so he claims. He was worshipped by the inhabitants of the underground village, who built a massive shrine to honor him. However, it's implied by Alex and Villager #37 that legends are told of him being a destroyer and a killer respectively. At one point, he presumably told the witch that Steve would come to the underground village. Somehow, he either left or was exiled from Minecraft to the Internet, judging by his admission to Jason, and was also stripped of his true form along the way.

The Crack![]

In the last scene in We Weren't Hacked!? a "big scary invisible thing" follows Jason down Mt. Noob and into the building marked Minecraft. This is highly believed to be The Great and Powerful One.

An Egg's Guide to Minecraft[]

In Part 1, a mysterious voice welcomes Jason to Minecraft. It teaches him a little about the game, but Jason is distracted too quickly. He asks if he can ride the pig. The voice starts to say yes, but before it can say more Jason adopts the pig, naming him George. Later, while Jason is riding, the voice tries to warn him he must build shelter for the night. Jason interrupts, saying he's busy. The voice tells him dangerous creatures lurk in the night, but Jason is sarcastic.

In Part 2, Jason asks the voice how to build a house. A different voice starts to tell him to get building materials, but Jason quickly notices the change. The voice explains that it's in his head and can change anytime, but Jason doesn't believe it. It commands Jason to fall off George, which he thinks he's not going to do and then does. He believes the voice and asks it how to build. That night, Jason shows off his "house", but the voice reveals it's a wall. It shows Jason night has fallen and monsters are surrounding them.

In Part 3, the original voice warns Jason that he's not safe in the forest. Jason joyfully greets it, but it shows him the advancing mobs and tells him to run. When Jason is cornered, the voice tries to tell him his escape plan worked, but he blames his failure on it.

In Part 4, the voice tells Jason he doesn't know Steve and questions where he's taking him. At the village, it starts to explain what NPC villages are, but Jason quickly gets bored.

The voice in Jason's head appears in a flashback in Part 5.

In Part 8, the voice of SethBling greets Jason inside his head. Jason exclaims that he knows it, which Steve overhears and asks who he's talking to. The voice instructs Jason to tell him "nobody". When Steve leaves, it says Jason would be better off not letting Steve know he hears voices.

InPart 9, the voice of SethBling asks why Steve hit the cow. It tells Jason there was no pig.

In Part 10, Jason and Steve are flying through a cave in slow motion when Jason appears to turn into The Great and Powerful One's head, causing Steve to shout. After the crash, Steve finds a huge statue of a white-eyed man towering above them.

In Part 12, The Great and Powerful One returns at the foot of his shrine, in the form of floating heads. Steve backs away and the heads make as if to attack him, but they disappear. He captures a villager who is frightened and calls him "Powerful One". After Steve's arm is fixed, he asks the villager where they are. The villager tells him they are in a rundown underground village, and the statue is a shrine built by the inhabitants for The Great and Powerful One. Steve doesn't know who that is, and Jason imitates the villager and repeats "The Great and Powerful One" in different voices. The villager still thinks Steve is The Great and Powerful One and asks why he came to them. Steve asks him where to find a stronghold. After he directs him to the one near the village, the villager suddenly realizes that The Great and Powerful One already knows where that is. Steve suddenly realizes who the villager thinks he is, and he laughs and says he's not. The villager tells himself that he's not him, even though he looks like him, and realizes something shocking. After Steve and Jason leave, the villager puts on his hat, revealing he's a witch, and goes to The Great and Powerful One's shrine to summon him. He says the one he spoke of came. The Great and Powerful One rises from the ground and opens his eyes, revealing what he looks like.

In Part 13, he stops Jason and Steve from going through the End portal and addresses Steve as "Brother". He summons a group of mobs which chase them down the tunnels. He reappears in the ravine when they are trapped.

In Part 14, he possesses Jason to stop him from escaping. While still controlling Jason, he himself orders Steve to come with him. Steve asks if he should go with him or Jason. He shouts him. Steve tells him to leave a message after the beep, and fakes his death falling down the ravine. Jason wakes up only to find out what happened. We hear Steve yelling an extended beep from the bottom of the ravine. The mobs look up at their leader. He tries to leave a message, but realizes what he's doing and says he never knows what to say. Villager #37 suggests an evil laugh. He performs one and tells Steve to call him. When Steve is revealed alive, The Great and Powerful One orders an enderman to get him back. Jason protests, asking who he is. He asks Jason if he recognizes him. A jumble of the voices inside Jason's head plays, and he realizes they all came from The Great and Powerful One. He says mockingly that Jason understands something. When his target is captured, he notices him struggling to break free and causes him to fall asleep. He thanks Jason and reveals that he wouldn't have come back if not for him. He decides Jason has outlived his purpose, ordering his mobs to chase him and the enderman holding Steve to return him to the portal. He teleports away after Jason and the mobs disappear into the tunnels.

In Part 15, Jason tells Villager #37 that they have to save Steve from The Great and Powerful One, despite his protests.

In Part 16, he is in his headquarters when an enderman shows up to tell him it didn't get the diamonds he asked for. He orders it to find them. When it leaves, he wonders what he was just doing. He realizes it, and Steve is revealed still sleeping and tied to a table. The Great and Powerful One is mentioned when Alex thinks Jason is making up stories, and when she wonders if he'll have diamonds. She says that if any mobs see Jason, they'll tell The Great and Powerful One where he is, and she kills Extremely Flamboyant Creeper to silence him. At the end, he appears when Steve wakes up, though he speaks from off-camera. His shadow gradually covers Steve as the camera zooms in, and he tells him they're going to get a lot closer. What he actually does is unknown, though it produces a bright white light and screams of pain from Steve.

The Great and Powerful One doesn't reappear in Parts 17 and 18, though Alex mentions him when she says he'll destroy the lands if the Sand villagers don't help them. They say he won't hurt them because they're NPCs. At the end of Part 18, one effect of his attack on Steve is shown when the latter forgets Jason.

Other[]

In Pig/Question 2, one of the answers is "The Great and Powerful One".

In The Great and Powerful One, Steve turns into him with a horrible scream and glowing white tears running down his face.

The Great and Powerful One appears in flashbacks in BLOCK BY BLOCK and New Studio!

In Animating a MinecraftShort!, The Great and Powerful One is mentioned when Dan Lloyd explains who will be voicing him after Scott's death.

Videos by other people[]

The Great and Powerful One appears in the speedpaint of "The Bridge" by Wayne, and in "Hello Brother!" by BinOfTrash.

Merch[]

The Great and Powerful One appears on a T-shirt.

Appearance[]

The Great and Powerful One looks almost identical to Steve, as pointed out by the witch. However, the only physical difference is his eyes, which are glowing white. He always seems to be floating in midair, usually surrounded by a shroud of black smoke, and his mouth doesn't move when he talks.

Powers and Abilities[]

The Great and Powerful One appears to have many powers. A list of his powers as shown in the videos follows:

  • Floating/defying gravity
  • Teleportation
  • Possibly hidden knowledge, as he knew where Steve and Jason ran to
  • Summoning mobs and making them do his bidding
  • Speaking without moving his mouth
  • Eyes flashing red when angry, which is likely involuntary
  • Presumably understanding mobs, as he knew the enderman had failed to get him the diamonds without actually seeing it shake its head
  • Presumably either possessing others' bodies, wiping their memories, or both, as he told Steve they would get closer and Steve is later shown to have a deeper voice and not recognize Jason, however the exact reason for this is unknown
Mind Manipulation Powers[]
  • Possessing others' minds without being in their bodies
  • Causing others to hear voices in their heads, though he mostly did this while he was out of his true form
  • Putting others to sleep

However, his powers were limited when he was a virus, as he is only shown speaking to Jason inside his head until he regains his body. It is also possible that he was able to cause Steve to dream of the End and see a vision of how to get there. Once close to his shrine, he was able to appear to Steve as floating heads and even make him see Jason as his head.

Trivia[]

  • The Great and Powerful One is based on Herobrine of the Creepypasta story of the same name, a ghost/stalker that is said to appear in Minecraft but is revealed to be a hoax, but appeared in mods, maps, story arcs, fanfics, videos, theories, songs, webcomics, and even books. He is a widely popular urban legend. The Great and Powerful One is similar to him in An Egg's Guide to Minecraft. Despite this, Element Animation have stated that The Great and Powerful One is not Herobrine.
  • The Great and Powerful One hunting down Steve is similar to stories in the Minecraft community of Steve and Herobrine being brothers, notably one in which they went to mine for diamonds but Herobrine fell into a pit of lava and had ever since been haunting Steve. Despite this, his motives in Egg's Guide are unknown.
    • It is also unknown why he wants diamonds.
  • He appears to be the leader of the Hostile Mobs.
  • He is parodied in A Minecraft Adventure - Part 2 when Tim refers to himself as The Great and Powerful Tim.
  • Judging by the witch's reaction to Steve with a broken arm, The Great and Powerful One is likely not invincible. However, he also talked to Steve as though he didn't think he was The Great and Powerful One, so he may have treated him as he would anyone else.
